Siemens Energy and Duke Energy Create Guinness World Record for Gas-fired Power Plants

  • Siemens Energy and Duke Energy jointly set the Guinness World Record for “Highest Power Simple Cycle Gas-fired Power Plant”
  • Siemens Energy SGT6-9000HL gas turbine achieves output power of up to 410.9 MW at Duke Energy’s Lincoln Gas Turbine Power Station in North Carolina, USA
  • Efficient, flexible gas turbine technology will help drive widespread adoption of renewable energy

Recently, Duke Energy’s Lincoln Gas Turbine Power Station, which uses Siemens Energy’s SGT6-9000HL (60 Hz) gas turbine, has been certified by the Guinness World Records as “The Highest Power Simple Cycle Gas Power Plant” with an output of 410.9 MW.

Siemens Energy previously supplied Duke Energy with an SGT6-9000HL gas turbine for installation at the Lincoln Gas Turbine Power Station approximately 25 miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of an innovative partnership agreement. At present, the equipment is in the commissioning stage, and after it is put into operation, it will be able to provide electricity to more than 300,000 households.

The product design of Siemens Energy SGT6-9000HL effectively prolongs the maintenance cycle. Compared with the existing model of the Lincoln Gas Turbine Power Station, the power generation efficiency of this model is increased by 34%, and it will become the most efficient model of Duke Energy’s gas turbine units.

Karim Amin, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy AG, said: “The output, efficiency and operational flexibility of gas turbines are key factors in the decarbonization of the energy industry. The Guinness World Record is a testament to Siemens Energy’s role in energy technology. industry leader. Together with Duke Energy, we will accelerate the progress toward net-zero emissions.”

The powerful output of the SGT6-9000HL goes hand in hand with agility. When the renewable energy such as solar energy or wind energy fluctuates, the HL-class gas turbine can generate electricity and connect to the grid in time to meet the demand for electricity and ensure a stable supply of electricity. The gas turbine certified by Guinness World Records was delivered in November 2019, and the first ignition operation took place in April 2020. It is also Siemens Energy’s first 60 Hz HL-class gas turbine.
