Siemens Energy, International Renewable Energy Agency and Industry Leaders Launch Industrial Decarbonization Coalition

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Siemens Energy jointly initiated the establishment of the “Industrial Decarbonization Alliance” together with 13 companies from various industries around the world to accelerate the realization of net zero emission goals and promote the decarbonization process of industrial value chains. Actively contribute to the implementation of the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement.

On September 1, the International Renewable Energy Agency held the Energy Transition Investment Forum in Bali, Indonesia. Francesco la Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency, and Karim Amin, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy AG, attended the meeting. The meeting adopted the “Bali Declaration” and officially launched the global “Industrial Decarbonization Alliance”. As the co-sponsor of the alliance, Siemens Energy has always actively promoted the establishment of the alliance and will jointly lead the alliance to carry out its work. The coalition plans to hold its first plenary meeting this fall during the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

In the process of promoting industrial green development, the extensive participation of leading companies in various industries not only helps to tap business opportunities, but also highlights the importance of formulating strategies and exchanging experiences in a cooperative manner in the field of industrial emission reduction. The industrial sector contributes about 25% of global GDP, but also produces 28% of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, in the process of transition to clean energy, all parties involved in the industry will be able to most effectively respond to challenges and seize opportunities through dialogue and joint actions. Establishing a multilateral platform for communication and cooperation will help accelerate global climate action.

“Climate action requires industry leaders to play a leading role,” said Francisco LaCamera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency. “The establishment of this alliance reflects the firm determination of the global industry to further decarbonize Step up action and explore business opportunities in the green development process of industry marked by transformational technologies such as renewable energy and green hydrogen. Our cooperation on the eve of COP27 reflects the solidarity of the global industry. We also sincerely invite more Many partners are involved in the alliance to realize our shared vision side by side.”

Karim Amin, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy AG, said: “To combat climate change, we need to rapidly and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The industrial sector accounts for more than a quarter of global emissions and is the second largest. In this work, cooperation is crucial. With leading technology, Siemens Energy, together with partners, will continue to create value for the realization of a low-carbon future. I believe that the establishment of the Industrial Decarbonization Alliance will help the Partners in industry, technology and knowledge build a high-quality exchange platform to drive the decarbonization process to an ever-accelerating pace.”

The Global Industrial Decarbonization Coalition aims to promote countries and regions to achieve net zero emission targets, promote decarbonization of the entire value chain in the industrial sector, and enhance the understanding and application of renewable energy solutions. The alliance is also committed to enhancing dialogue and coordinating actions among stakeholders in the industrial sector, including the public sector and commercial enterprises.

The International Renewable Energy Agency will coordinate and facilitate the activities of the Alliance, drawing on its extensive experience in organizing similar multilateral platforms such as the Global Geothermal Alliance, the SIDS Lighthouse Project, and the Action Alliance. IRENA will also contribute its knowledge and experience in policy, regulatory, technical and financial aspects of decarbonization of end-use industries, as well as industrial decarbonization.
